| 3 Types of Headaches & Healing Without Drugs With Physiotherapy |
In our lives we must have experienced headaches, headaches that you experience or other people experience so varied that the causes are headaches of various kinds that have different symptoms. Knowing the types of headaches will be very beneficial for us to be able to deal with headaches appropriately according to the type of headache being suffered. This time we will discuss headaches that often arise and can be overcome without taking medication, namely by means of Physiotherapy.
The International Headache Society agrees on a classification system or types of headaches. Because so many people suffer from headaches and because the treatment of headaches is sometimes difficult, it is hoped that with this new classification system it will be easy to establish a specific diagnosis for the type of headache and to provide better / effective interventions
There are three main categories for types of headaches:
- Primary headache
- Secondary headache
- Cranial neuralgia, facial pain and other headaches
1. Primary Headache
Included in the types of primary headaches are: tension type headache, migraine headaches, and clustersa. Tension Type Headache
Tension headaches are characterized by a head that feels tense and severe, this type of headache is the most common type of primary headache. up to 90% of adults experience or will experience this type of headache. Tension headaches are more common in women than men.Symptoms of tension headaches:
- The pain starts in the back of the head and upper neck and is described as urgent or depressed.
- Often described as pressure around the head with the strongest pressure above the eyebrows.
- Pain is usually mild (not disabling) and bilateral (affecting both sides of the head).
- This pain is not related to aura, nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light and sound.
- The pain occurs sporadically (rarely and without a pattern) but can occur frequently and even every day in some people.
- Pain allows most people to function normally, despite the headaches he is suffering from.
Causes of Tension Headaches
This type of tension headache (strain) that most suffered, has symptoms or characteristics in the form of mild or moderate pain in the head, neck and behind the eyes. Some patients feel headaches like a tight rope around their head. Causes of Tension Headaches are due to contractions (tension) of the head and neck muscles. Certain foods, activities and stressors can cause this contraction. Some people experience this tension headache after staring at a computer screen for hours or driving for long periods (monotonous and long positions). Cold temperatures can also trigger headaches in some people.Other factors that can cause tension headaches include:
- drink alcohol
- eye strain
- fatigue
- smoke
- colds or flu
- sinus infection
- caffeine (for example coffee)
- poor posture
- emotional stress
Physiotherapy for Tension Headaches
Physiotherapy for healing tension headaches is very easy and usually patients can immediately feel the pain subside immediately after being given therapy. The therapies provided are:- Stiff muscle stretch
- Strengthening of weak muscles
- Posture correction with kinesiotaping
b. Migraine Headaches
Order number two for the most common type of primary headache is migraine. An estimated 28 million people in the United States (about 12% of the population) will experience migraine headaches. Migraine affects both children and adults. Before puberty, boys and girls are affected equally by migraine headaches, but after puberty, girls are more often than boys. It is estimated that 6% of men and up to 18% of women will experience migraine headaches in their lives.Migraine headaches are characterized by severe throbbing headaches or throbbing sensation in one area of the head (headaches) and are generally accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound.
Migraine attacks can cause significant pain for hours to a day and sufferers will be more comfortable in a dark, quiet place to lie down.
Some migraines are preceded or accompanied by sensory warning symptoms (aura) in their vision, such as flashing lights, blind spots, or tingling in the arms or legs.
Causes of Headaches (Migraine)
Migraine or headache is described as a headache that feels throbbing (throbbing) which is usually on one side of the head. The exact cause of migraine headaches is not yet fully known. For a long time, the prevailing theory was that migraines were caused by problems with the head arteries. Recent research, has shown that, narrowing of blood vessels that can cause pain, the cause of migraines, itself, is most likely rooted in central nervous system disorders.
Research to understand the details of this problem is ongoing, but the following are thought to be important factors for migraine headaches:
- Low serotonin levels. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that controls mood, sleep, and appetite
- Magnesium deficiency, which is an essential mineral for nerve function
- Neuropeptides "substances such as small protein molecules" trigger inflammation and make active pain receptors.
- Hormonal fluctuations or unstable hormones, especially estrogen in women
- Inflammation of the maxillary nerve, a branch of the trigeminal nerve that runs behind the cheekbones and controls the sensation of the mouth and nose.
Physiotherapy for migraine headaches
Physiotherapy for healing migraine headaches is relatively longer than tension headaches. The therapies provided are:- Diathermy for blood vessel dilation
- Reduction of symptomatic pain with kinesiotaping
- MLDV for serotonin release
c. Cluster headaches
- Cluster headaches are a rare type of primary headache that affects 0.1% of the population (1 in 1,000 people). More often affects men in their twenties, women and children can also suffer from this type of headache.
- Symptoms of Cluster headaches: Cluster headaches are headaches that come in clusters based on time that lasts weeks or months, separated by pain-free periods of months or years
- During periods where cluster headaches occur, headaches usually occur once or twice a day, but some patients may experience headaches more than twice a day.
- Each episode of headache lasts from 30 to 90 minutes.
- Headache attacks tend to occur at the same time every day and often wake up at night when the patient sleeps well.
- Headaches are usually excruciating and are located around or behind one eye.
- Some patients describe pain as feeling like there is a hot object in the eye. The affected eye can become red, inflamed, and runny.
- The nose on the affected side can become blocked or feel tight and runny.
Causes of Cluster Headaches
Cluster headaches have general symptoms of excruciating headaches accompanied by pain in around one eye with excessive tears, but can spread to other areas of the face, head, neck and shoulders, redness of the eyes on the affected side. The cause of pain in cluster headaches is the result of dilation (dilation) of blood vessels that supply blood to the brain and face. This dilation of blood vessels puts pressure on the trigeminal nerve, which sends sensations from the face to the brain. Unfortunately, it is still unknown exactly why this dilation of blood vessels occurs.
Researchers believe that abnormalities in a small area of the brain called the hypothalamus may be responsible for causing cluster headaches. The hypothalamus is the part of the brain that regulates body temperature, blood pressure, sleep cycles, and hormone release.
Another cause of cluster headaches is the sudden release of the chemical histamine or serotonin, each of which functions against allergens and regulates mood.
